WCCS Masonry Students Participate in Historic Mortar Analysis of Tremont School Building
Selma, AL, October 1, 2024 — The masonry students at Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) recently had the unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of one of Selma’s historic landmarks—the Tremont School Building. Under the guidance of Catherine Cooper from the National Park Service’s National Center for Preservation Technology & Training, the students conducted a mortar analysis on the building to help assess its structural integrity and inform future restoration efforts.
The Tremont School Building, a symbol of Selma’s rich history, requires specialized restoration work to ensure its longevity. Cooper led the analysis, teaching students the intricacies of analyzing historic materials and their role in preserving cultural heritage. "Engaging the next generation in historic preservation is essential to ensuring the long-term care of our nation's landmarks. The hands-on learning these students experience through this project not only enhances their skills but also instills a sense of pride in maintaining our shared history," said Cooper.
Students collected mortar samples from various parts of the school building and then took them to the chemistry lab on the WCCS Selma campus for further analysis. In the lab, they carefully followed a multi-step process involving grinding down the mortar, dissolving it in acid to separate the lime binder, and studying the sand particles left behind. This detailed process helps reveal the original composition of the mortar, providing essential insights for accurately restoring the building.
WCCS is proud of its students for their contribution to this important project, which highlights the value of combining academic instruction with practical, hands-on experience. Their work will play a crucial role in preserving the Tremont School Building for future generations.
